The Tanzania Plant Health and Pesticide Authority (TPHPA) has imposed import bans on soybeans and maize seeds from Malawi after Pest Risk Analyses revealed potential threats to Tanzania's crops, including the presence of the Tobacco Ringspot Virus (TRSV) in Malawi. The ban aims to safeguard the soybean subsector in Tanzania and prevent economic losses for local farmers, as TRSV is known to cause substantial damage to soybean crops. Additionally, the TPHPA has implemented a temporary ban on all maize seed imports from Malawi, including transit shipments, to maintain a non-GMO status in Tanzania's agricultural practices.
