Malaysia is nearly self-sufficient in producing basic foodstuffs, with over 90% production rate for chicken, duck, chicken eggs, and fish, and over 100% for local fruits and vegetables, except for a few items. However, the country relies on imports for beef, rice, and certain temperate climate produce. To ensure a continuous food supply, the Agriculture Ministry is focusing on optimizing land use and using modern technology in the agriculture sector. The ministry is also preparing the National Agrofood Policy (DAN) 2.0 for sustainable development from 2021 to 2030. Additionally, the ministry is improving import control activities following the National Audit Report 2018 Series 3, including digitalization and strengthening enforcement at entry points.
