The Soconusco region in Chiapas, Mexico, is expected to see an economic benefit of over 750 million pesos from the production of ataulfo mangoes. The crop employs 2,500 producers and provides direct jobs for around 20,000 people each harvest season. However, the area has lost 5,000 hectares due to a lack of support. This year's harvest is projected to be 100,000 tons, a decrease of 30,000 tons from last year, due to climate change and government support issues. Half of the harvest is exported to the US, Canada, and Europe.
