In 2020, Europe's trade of live animals reached a value of 1.8 billion euros in exports and 1.1 billion euros in imports. Pigs and poultry were the primary exports, mainly to Germany, Belgium, and other European countries. The United States stood as the third largest export market, particularly for horses. Germany and Belgium were the primary importers of live animals, with the majority being poultry from Germany. The transportation of these animals predominantly occurred by road, with the Netherlands hosting a significant portion of the travel. Aviation and maritime transport also played a role in the movement of live animals, with over sixteen thousand flight movements and some shipments.
