The Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (Mapa) has seized over 1.4 million liters of beverages from establishments in Minas Gerais state due to evidence of fraudulent activity. The fraud involved the removal of raw materials and the possible replacement with water and sugarcane. One establishment has been closed, and other companies involved may face fines of up to R$ 117,000.00 per irregular lot. The operation, which involved federal agricultural tax auditors and the Federal Superintendence of Agriculture of Minas Gerais, also estimated that over 2,000 tons of green coconuts, sufficient to make 530,000 liters of coconut water, were no longer used in the production of these beverages.
