The State of Mexico is a leading producer of prickly pear and nopal in Mexico, particularly in the Teotihuacán Valley. The region cultivates over 17.5 thousand hectares of these cacti, focusing on the varieties Nopal Tunero, Nopal Verdura, and Nopal Xoconostle. Due to its nutritional value and cultural significance, nopal production has gained interest, but it faces threats from pests and diseases like the cochineal and thrips. A campaign for the phytosanitary management of nopal and subsoil cleaning for planting has been initiated to combat these issues.
