Mexican watermelon export grows in 2020

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of Mexico reported that, in 2020, the national watermelon production totaled 1,357 thousand tons, which meant an increase of 1.0 compared to the 1,346 thousand tons registered in 2019. The entity highlighted that, worldwide, Mexico ranks eleventh as a watermelon producer, with a global share of 1.3% and an Average Annual Growth Rate (TMAC) of 7.2%. According to data from the Agrifood and Fisheries Information Service (SIAP) in 2020, Mexico sold 733 thousand tons of watermelon abroad. Sales allowed it to position itself as the second exporting country. The institution highlighted that the participation of watermelons in national fruit production is 5.7%, which represented a per capita consumption of 4.6 kilograms.
