The Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (Midagri) in Peru has successfully bred 25 purebred French Alpine goats using transcervical artificial insemination with fresh semen. This achievement is part of the PROCAP project developed by the National Institute of Agrarian Innovation (INIA), which aims to enhance the sustainability and profitability of goat farming in Peru. The project uses high-value genetic material to produce goats that can yield quality meat and milk, strengthening the competitiveness of the goat industry. The French Alpine breed is known for its high milk yield and adaptability to rugged climates, making it an ideal choice for Peru's dry forest areas. However, the industry faces challenges such as illegal logging, change in land use for agriculture, overgrazing, and soil contamination, which the PROCAP project aims to address through innovative technologies and methodologies for improving productivity, health, nutrition, and management of goats.
