The Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation (MINAGRI) in Peru has introduced a new quinoa variety called Señor del Huerto, developed by the National Institute of Agrarian Innovation (INIA). This variety is renowned for its high yield and grain quality, with an average yield of 2.95 to 3.20 tons per hectare and potential harvest of up to 4.03 tons per hectare. It is also resistant to mildew and has a protein content of 11.02%, making it a valuable food source, especially for pregnant mothers, children, and the elderly. This new variety is expected to boost the income of 3,000 small and medium producers in the Ayacucho region by 113.07%, and is part of Peru's strategy to remain the leading quinoa exporter, a position it has held since 2014.
