A recent study conducted by the Agraecology Center of Embrapa Meio Ambiente in partnership with other educational institutions has found that lettuces grown in agroecological agroforestry systems (SAFs) have similar dimensions and dry mass to those grown alone, except in full sun where a higher dry mass was observed in single cultivation. The research aims to enhance the production factors in the mixed cultivation of vegetables and green manures in SAFs and discovered that intercropping irrigated lettuce with arugula and radish improved production per unit area. The study also highlighted the benefits of green manure plants in improving soil quality and the importance of different types of soil preparation for the establishment of green manure species in SAFs. The researchers have published their findings and emphasize the need for further research to optimize the establishment of green manures in agroecological SAFs.
