The Mongolian government has announced a mandatory requirement for all cattle to be marked with ear tags during the upcoming spring. This measure is aimed at reducing livestock theft and facilitating the control of infectious diseases among cattle. With animal husbandry being a crucial part of Mongolia's economy, particularly for its nomadic population, the government is implementing this strategy to protect and improve the health and safety of the country's livestock, which numbered at 71.1 million in 2022. The initiative is in response to the challenges posed by winter starvation, also known as white dzud, which has significantly impacted livestock populations in over 70% of the country.
