Morocco is leading in fish production in Africa, with a 9% increase in coastal and artisanal fishing landings in the first three months of 2023 compared to the same period in 2022, totaling over 210,000 tons. The value of these landings reached nearly MAD 3 billion ($298 million), with significant increases in seaweed, shellfish, and crustaceans. Pelagic fish and white fish made up the majority of the landings, with nearly 5,000 tons coming from Mediterranean ports. Morocco's fisheries and aquaculture sector is one of its most important economic activities, ranking 13th globally and first in Africa in fish production.
