Between July and December of the current fiscal year, Nepal saw a significant increase in the import of fresh vegetables, with the total value reaching Rs 22.51 billion, a rise of Rs 3.29 billion compared to the same period last year. India and China were the primary countries from which these vegetables were imported. The Department of Customs reported that the main imports included tomatoes, onions, garlic, cauliflower, cabbages, carrots, green peas, squash, and asparagus. Additionally, Nepal imported over Rs 16 billion worth of rice during the same period. The rising import of agricultural products is attributed to factors such as the destruction of agricultural land, a lack of mechanization, inadequate training for farmers, limited subsidies for farm businesses, and increasing demand.
