There has been a 64% increase in food imports in Nepal over the past seven months compared to the same period last year, according to the Department of Customs. The total value of food imports during mid-March to mid-November reached 44.90 billion rupees, up from 27.44 billion rupees the previous year. This includes a 46% increase in rice imports, an 18% increase in sugar imports, and a doubling of expenses for wheat and paddy purchases. There has also been a significant increase in the import of dry fruits, food supplements, and herbal products. This surge in imports is attributed to increased household consumption and panic buying during the nationwide lockdown.
