The Nigerian government has warned livestock breeders and poultry farmers about an anthrax outbreak in neighboring countries, including Northern Ghana, Burkina Faso, and Togo. The Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Ernest Afolabi Ernest, has advised farmers in states like Kebbi, Sokoto, Niger, Kwara, Oyo, Ogun, and Lagos to vaccinate their animals and exercise caution to prevent the spread of the disease. Anthrax, caused by the bacterium Bacillus anthracis, can affect both humans and animals and has already resulted in fatalities in the affected countries. The government has also advised the public to avoid consuming potential carriers of the disease, such as hides, smoked meat, and bush meat, until the situation is under control.
