In 2012, the discovery of the Pepper weevil (Anthonomus eugenii) at six pepper growers in the Westland area of the Netherlands led to the government imposing quarantine status on the organism and halting sales from the affected companies. The outbreak, believed to have been introduced via peppers from Central America, prompted the Netherlands and later the EU to mandate the importation of paprika and pepper with a certificate to prevent further spread. The strict import regulations and inspections have effectively contained the outbreak, with no detections in the past year. The measures have successfully prevented the spread of the Pepper weevil in the EU, in contrast to Canada, where the organism has become established and caused significant crop damage and pest control costs.
