In the 2020/21 financial year, German commercial mills increased their grain grinding by nearly 60,000 tons to around 8.76 million tons, with spelled seeing the largest increase. The number of active mills decreased by two, and the average grinding per mill remained almost unchanged. The milling industry data for 2021, published by the Federal Information Center for Agriculture (BZL), also showed a shift in the number of mills in different size classes. Small farms continue to play a significant role, especially in the South region, with many reporting less than 1,000 tons of grinding.
