Ocean Wise has stopped recommending MSC-certified salmon fisheries from Southeast Alaska due to concerns over the impact on endangered Southern Resident killer whales and other species. Meanwhile, the U.S. Gulf of Mexico shrimp fishery has become the first to obtain Responsible Fisheries Management (RFM) certification, covering white, brown, and pink shrimp. The Global Seafood Alliance (GSA) conducted a survey in Japan, finding that 69% of consumers prioritize food safety when choosing responsibly-sourced seafood, and 23.1% consider environmental sustainability the most important factor. The survey also revealed that 36.4% of consumers believe all parts of the aquaculture production chain should undergo a third-party audit.
