The National Biosafety Commission of Brazil (CNTBio) has approved the commercialization of flour made from genetically modified (GM) HB4 wheat in the country. The flour is requested to be imported exclusively in food, feed or by-products for drought tolerance and herbicides. This follows the lead of Argentina, which was the first country to authorize a drought-tolerant modified wheat event. The approval is a significant precedent as it validates the food and environmental safety of Bioceres transgenic wheat, a product that has also been approved in Argentina and is under regulatory review in other countries like Australia, New Zealand, Indonesia, and South Africa.
