An outbreak of listeriosis in Ontario, Canada, has led to nine reported cases and five hospitalizations, prompting a national recall of several plant-based milks. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has issued a warning against consuming Silk oat, almond, coconut, almond and cashew milk, and Great Value almond milk with expiry dates up to and including Oct. 4. These products may carry Listeria bacteria, which can cause symptoms like vomiting, nausea, fever, muscle aches, severe headache, and neck stiffness, and can be fatal. Ontaro's chief medical officer of health is advising the public to discard the recalled products or return them for a refund, especially those at higher risk of listeriosis, such as the elderly, pregnant women, and those with weakened immune systems.
