The government is increasing the quarantine at borders for international consignments and mail to prevent the illegal import of prohibited fresh fruits such as sugar apples and guavas, as the peak season approaches. The Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency will use X-ray screening, quarantine detection dogs, and joint inspections with customs and international mail logistics centers. They will also investigate small-quantity cargo warehouses and all prohibited fruits or items if found. The Quarantine Headquarters will use 89 special judicial police officers and a planning investigation team to inspect approximately 1,400 foreign grocery stores and traditional markets, and will collect and dispose of all imported fresh fruits that are prohibited. Those who import or distribute prohibited products could face imprisonment for up to 3 years or a fine of up to 30 million won.
