A study by Italian scientists from the University of Perugia has shown that industrial chicken hybrids do not adapt well to organic production systems. The research, which involved testing breeds in traditional and organic systems, found that organically reared birds had higher meat quality but also higher lipid oxidation and certain behavioral characteristics. The researchers are now focusing on finding a breed of birds that can be successfully raised in an organic environment. They also emphasized the need to preserve native poultry breeds, some of which may have traits suitable for organic farming, and mentioned a Genealogical Book of Poultry in Italy that includes various breeds.
