Iran's red meat production has seen a significant decrease of 18%, falling to 33,510 tons in the tenth month of the current Iranian calendar year (December 22, 2023-January 20, 2024), compared to the same period last year. The majority of the output was beef and veal, followed by lamb, mutton, goat meat, and other livestock. This decrease also reflects a 9% drop from the ninth month. Despite Iran being a leading consumer of red meat in West Asia, its per capita consumption is significantly lower than countries like the U.S. and Australia, primarily due to the prohibition of pork in Islamic law.
