Pakistan is taking steps to boost its position in the global olive market by introducing a "National Olive Value Chain Policy" which has been submitted to the federal cabinet for approval. The policy, compiled by the Ministry of National Food Security and Research, aims to increase olive production, enhance processing quality, involve the private sector, facilitate value chain management, and boost domestic consumption and international competitiveness. The strategy also plans to extend the Olive Development Project under the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) for an additional year with a budget of Rs. 637 million. The province has already planted about 5.5 million olive trees, mainly in Balochistan, Punjab, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, with significant investment starting in 2012-2016.
