The Ministry of Trade in Indonesia is working to increase national exports, particularly palm shells, to reach the Japanese market, with a transaction value of US$12 million annually. This initiative is part of Japan's energy policy, which aims for 24% of its energy to come from new and renewable sources by 2030. The Ministry is facilitating business matching meetings with Japanese biomass industry business players to maintain and increase palm shell exports to Japan. In the first half of 2021, Indonesia's non-oil and gas trade with Japan saw a 29.08% increase compared to the same period in the previous year, reaching US$22.53 billion. The main export commodities to Japan in 2020 included coal, precious metal scrap, petroleum gas, nickel, and insulated cables, while the main import commodities were motor vehicle accessories, sheet steel in the form of coils, steam turbines, and completely knocked down motor vehicles.
