Ginseng, a plant with medicinal properties, has gained international attention, particularly from Europe and Asia. The variety from Querência do Norte in Paraná, Brazil, has become commercially significant for local farmers. In 2005, the Brazilian Ginseng Small Farmers Association (Aspag) was formed to oversee production and marketing. The plant, which is not grown with chemical fertilizers or pesticides, is cultivated on 20 hectares and was harvested 300 tons in the 2019/20 season. The price per kilo varies based on the cultivation method and association membership. Due to high demand, local producers have had to turn down offers from other countries. Chinese businessmen have even bought land to build a processing plant to increase purchase volume and encourage local producers to expand cultivation.
