In March 2023, Vietnam achieved a significant record in pepper exports, reaching 35,913 tons with a value of 107.2 million USD, marking a 27.5% increase from the previous month. Black pepper dominated exports, accounting for 93.6 million USD of the total, while white pepper brought in 13.6 million USD. The export price per ton for black and white pepper increased and decreased, respectively. Remarkably, exports to China soared by 85.2% to 15,710 tons, setting a new monthly record. This surge is attributed to China's purchase to make up for lost time due to Covid-19 closures. Despite the increase in exports to China, there was a decrease in exports to the United States, Germany, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and India due to economic issues. Other markets like Iran, Türkiye, and Egypt experienced significant growth in pepper imports. Overall, the first quarter of 2023 saw a 40.5% increase in export volume year-over-year, although the export turnover decreased by 7.3% due to the shift in market dynamics and economic challenges.
