Mexico saw a 2.1% increase in milk production in 2020, reaching 12.553 million liters, as the sector was deemed essential. The country ranked 13th in the world in milk production, but per capita consumption remains below that of the US and other countries. The dairy market in Mexico is valued at $16 billion annually and has potential for growth. However, demand for dairy products fell by 2% in 2020 due to unemployment and economic uncertainty. Only 614 million liters of the national production were marketed as unpasteurized milk, with the rest being industrialized for sale in fluid form and dairy products. The dairy sector faces challenges such as increasing consumption of healthy dairy products, improving competitiveness, and managing the seasonality of production.
