Peru is a leading producer of potatoes, with the tuber making up 10.5% of the country's total agricultural production, valued at 8,314 million soles. The country is home to thousands of potato varieties, including native or colored ones, and is the world's contributor to food security through these. Potato cultivation is crucial for the economy, especially in regions like Puno, Huánuco, Cusco, Cajamarca, Huancavelica and Junín, providing employment and generating over 25 million work days annually. Despite challenges like climate change and resource scarcity, the Peruvian potato's biodiversity and adaptability make it a key component of sustainable food production. The country exports around ten varieties, including native ones, and leads Andean tuber production in Latin America.
