The Peruvian white shrimp aquaculture harvest is projected to experience a significant decline of -46.63% in 2024, according to the National Aquaculture Society (SNA), with production expected to drop below 21,000 MT. This decline is attributed to a global crisis in the sector, highlighted by falling international prices, increased input costs, and decreased global demand, leading to the shutdown of many operations. The crisis threatens to end the Peruvian white shrimp industry, impacting 98% of the Tumbes region's exports, formal employment, and gender inclusion. The SNA is calling for public sector support to manage production costs through innovation and urges immediate action to prevent a complete collapse of the industry.
