The Philippines has imposed a ban on the importation of live goats from the United States following the detection of Q fever in recently imported goats. Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. issued a memorandum ordering the suspension of sanitary and phytosanitary import clearance for goats from the US, effective immediately. The order also permits existing shipments in transit to enter the country under quarantine rules and testing requirements. This decision was made due to the lack of effective treatment or vaccination for Q fever in the Philippines, and the potential risk to the local ruminant industry and public health. Q fever, caused by Coxiella burnetti, can be transmitted to humans and is often symptomatic with non-specific and mild symptoms such as fever, fatigue, and headache, occurring two to three weeks after exposure. The disease can be treated with antibiotics.
