On December 11, the Cebu Customs in the Philippines seized 42 containers of mature coconuts worth 223 million Philippine pesos that were being exported to China, as they were declared as containing waste paper in the customs declaration. This seizure is in line with the Philippines' 1985 law that prohibits the export of unprocessed coconuts to protect the local coconut industry. The confiscated coconuts will be transferred to the Philippine Coconut Authority. In 2019, the Philippines was approved to export green coconuts to China, leading to significant exports of various coconut products, and in 2020, the country became China's second largest coconut supplier.
