The Philippines' Department of Agriculture – Bureau of Plant Industry (BPI) has officially recognized two new banana varieties, developed by Tropic Biosciences using the CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing system, as non-GMOs. These bananas, TRB011001 and TRB011002, are noted for their reduced browning, which could significantly decrease food waste and CO2 emissions. The BPI had also granted the same non-coverage certificate to a different banana variety from Tropic in 2023. Additionally, this year, BPI approved Sicilian Rouge tomato seeds from Sanatech Seed, which is rich in gamma-aminobutyric acid, further expanding the catalog of approved gene-edited crops for importing and cultivation in the Philippines.
