The Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation in Peru conducted a preventive exercise to prepare for a foot-and-mouth disease outbreak, a condition that Peru has been disease-free since 2004. The drill, led by SENASA, involved a mock outbreak on a Sullana cattle farm, focusing on surveillance, quarantine, disinfection, and livestock transit control. Attended by animal health specialists from the northern macro region, the exercise aimed to review procedures for dealing with such emergencies, including sample analysis and execution of control and eradication measures. This drill underscores Peru's commitment to maintaining its disease-free status and protecting its livestock industry from highly contagious and economically damaging foot-and-mouth disease.
