A severe heat wave in 2021 resulted in the destruction of half of Canada's mustard seed crop, which typically supplies 80 percent of the seeds for France. The remaining 20 percent was grown in Burgundy. Climate damage and insect damage have further reduced harvests since 2017. To address the shortage, particularly for Dijon mustard, the Burgundy Mustard Association has urged French farmers to increase mustard sowing areas and has doubled the distribution price of mustard seeds. The efforts have led to an increase in the cultivation area and the number of farmers involved, with an expected return of Dijon mustard to French stores by October and the elimination of the shortage by 2023.
