Eurostat's latest data reveals a 2.0% increase in pig slaughter in the EU from January to April 2024 compared to the same period last year, leading to a 3.7% rise in pork production, totaling 6.95 million tons. Eastern European countries like Croatia, Bulgaria, Poland, and Hungary saw significant increases in slaughter rates, while major producers such as Spain, Germany, France, Italy, and Belgium also reported growth. Denmark noted an increase in slaughter weight despite fewer pigs being slaughtered. In contrast, smaller member states like Latvia, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Greece saw declines in pork production, with Greece experiencing the largest drop at 18.4%.
