Bulgaria is experiencing a significant shortage of sunflower production, leading to a drastic decrease in exports and the shutdown of workshops. The country's sunflower production has dropped by 700,000 tons to 1.4 million tons due to last year's drought, while the capacity for processing over 4 million tons remains. The high cost and low yields of Bulgarian sunflowower have resulted in higher prices, and the lack of raw materials in the Black Sea region has increased pressure on producers. Despite these challenges, domestic sunflower oil consumption is being met, and imports of unrefined oil from Ukraine are keeping processing plants operational. The Association of Vegetable Oil Producers is advocating for solutions to produce at competitive prices, suggesting an increase in yields, diversification of crops, and the restoration of irrigation.
