REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA – The National Food Agency (Bapanas) has proposed restrictions on ethanol imports to protect the by-products of the domestic sugar industry, particularly molasses. Head of Bapanas Arief Prasetyo Adi stated that molasses is one of the raw materials for ethanol production.
According to him, with the opening of ethanol imports, domestic molasses stocks will accumulate due to declining demand.
"If ethanol from abroad is imported, then the molasses won't sell, it will remain full in the tanks, in storage. If it's full, how can the factory continue to crush sugarcane? It can't," said Arief, Thursday (11/9/2025).
He urged the Ministry of Trade (Kemendag) to reconsider the restriction on ethanol imports. However, Arief emphasized that the decision lies within the authority of Kemendag.
"Please consider so that the sugarcane can still be continuously absorbed, can continue to be crushed, so the molasses must be released. One of the ways to release it is for ethanol production. So, please..."
