Turkey: Request for a 25 percent increase in bread prices

ISTANBUL The Bakers' Association has applied for a 25 percent increase in bread prices. Stating that bakers are going through difficult times due to increasing costs, Istanbul Bakers' Association President Erdoğan Çetin said, "We made a request for 240 grams of bread to be 15 liras. Of course, we expect the authorities to approve this. Flour prices should not go up this much in such a short time. A solution must definitely be found for this." Standard 200 grams of bread is sold for 10 liras throughout Istanbul. However, recent increases in flour, electricity and water costs have brought bakers' demand for an increase in bread prices to the agenda. Istanbul Bakers' Association President Erdoğan Çetin said, "Due to these recent increases and our inability to find personnel, nearly 150 bakeries have closed in Istanbul.
