The sturgeon fish population in the Sea of Azov, which has been severely affected by uncontrolled fishing and natural factors, is set to be restored through a plan to release millions of young sturgeon by 2040. This initiative, led by Marina Borisyuk, adviser to the head of the Donetsk People's Republic for the Azov region, aims to replenish Russian sturgeon, stellate sturgeon, and beluga populations. The decline in fish numbers is due to increased sea salinity and a lack of comprehensive studies since the mid-20th century, compounded by extensive fishing by Ukraine over the past 30 years. The Northern Azov region has been closed to fishing since 2022, aiding in the recovery of some commercial fish species.
