Indonesia is struggling to increase its number of new exporters of marine and fishery products to the European Union (EU), currently at 174 fish processing units. The EU has placed a moratorium on new exporters until quality and safety standards are met. Despite efforts from the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) to improve quality assurance and safety systems, only snail exporters have been approved. The KKP has also implemented EU regulations to combat illegal fishing, but the fishing methods used in Indonesia are still considered incompatible with international standards, and the EU imposes a high tax rate on fish from Indonesia.
