India, the world's largest vegetable oil importer, is experiencing a global supply disruption, leading to the formation of a new vegetable oil market. The country is turning to rice bran oil, a by-product of rice processing, due to its lower cost and similar taste to sunflower oil. The cost of rice bran oil is significantly less than sunflower oil, especially with the increase in palm oil prices and restrictions on its supply from Indonesia, and problems with the import of sunflower oil from Ukraine. The demand for rice bran oil has increased due to its health benefits, with housewives like Aditi Sharma reporting improvements in health and reduced cholesterol levels. The country is set to produce a record 1.05 million tonnes of rice bran oil in 2022, up from about 950,000 tonnes in 2021, as several oil refiners maximize production to reduce imports of competing oils. However, local stocks are not enough to meet the growing demand, and countries like Bangladesh are being imported from to help meet the demand.
