Portugal's rice industry is facing significant challenges with an estimated loss of around 40 million euros due to the selling prices of rice being below the production cost. The price of rice has fallen from 550 euros per ton in the previous campaign to 350 euros in the current agricultural campaign, leading to unsustainable conditions for rice cultivation. The industry also struggles with unsold rice from the previous year and a decrease in exports to the Middle East due to competition from American and Australian rice. In response, rice producers in Portugal are planning a meeting to evaluate the impact of these low selling prices and develop a strategy to safeguard and strengthen the sector.
