The Department of Crop Production reports an increase in rice production in the South Central Coast, Southeast, and Central Highlands provinces for the 2023 summer-autumn crop, with an output of 1.61 million tons. However, some localities have not reduced the amount of rice seeds sown per unit area. For the 2023 - 2024 winter-spring season, the department plans a rice area of 406,000 hectares with an expected yield of 65.70 tons/day per hectare. Recommendations include balancing irrigation water sources, shifting from a 3-crop to 2-crop production structure in drought-prone areas, and promoting conversion to short-term dry crops in areas lacking irrigation water.
