Romania experienced 67 outbreaks of sheep and goat plague last summer, resulting in the destruction of 280,000 animals. The worst outbreak saw 49,091 sheep euthanized. Despite these setbacks, exports are projected to hit 100,000 sheep by year-end, assuming no new outbreaks. The country has resumed exports to traditional markets like Jordan and Morocco. The situation is mirroring that of Greece, where a significant increase in sheep culls in 2024 compared to 2023 highlights a severe crisis. Over 17,500 sheep have been culled due to the disease, with farmers urgently calling for the resumption of lamb slaughter to meet demand and maintain the growing export market for young lambs.
