Russia has seen a significant increase in its cheese production and self-sufficiency, with a 117% increase since 2004 and 74% increase since 2013, satisfying growing domestic demand. In 2021, the country produced a record 756 thousand tons of cheese, with a per capita consumption of 6.6 kg per year. Despite this, Russia still relies on imports for about 25% of its deliveries, mainly from Belarus, Argentina, Serbia, Switzerland, and Kazakhstan. However, Russian cheese exports also increased by 18.6% in 2021, reaching a record 33.3 thousand tons, with the main export destinations being Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Belarus, Uzbekistan, and Azerbaijan. The quality of Russian cheeses has been recognized internationally, with domestic producers winning medals at world competitions.
