The European Commission has approved Russia's request to export snail products to the EU, as stated in Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2022/34. This regulation adds Russia to the list of countries allowed to export certain animals and goods for human consumption. Those interested in exporting snail products from Russia to the EU will need to ensure compliance with EU requirements and apply through the Cerberus information system. Despite Bulgaria being the largest EU snail producer, Lithuania leads in exports. Europe's snail market experienced a contraction in 2020 after a four-year growth period, with Bulgaria, Romania, France, and Belgium as significant exporters. Consumption in the EU exceeds 100,000 tons annually, and snail extract has found increased use in the dermatological sector due to its therapeutic properties.
