The Agricultural and Livestock Service (SAG) of Chile has issued a warning regarding the potential invasion of the red palm weevil (Rhynchophorus ferrugineus), a pest not yet present in the country. This insect, which is native to Asia and causes significant damage to palm trees, has been recently spotted in Uruguay, leading to concerns about its spread to Chile, especially with the increase in international trade and travel. In response, the SAG is enhancing border control surveillance and setting up traps in key regions. Additionally, the public is encouraged to report any sightings of the weevil or symptoms such as palm tree death to the SAG, aiming to prevent an outbreak and protect Chile's native palm species.
