The Vietnam Poultry Association (VIPA) has reported a significant amount of illegal poultry importation into Vietnam, with up to 250,000 tons of live chicken and tens of thousands of tons of waste chicken smuggled in annually. The illegal trade also extends to buffaloes and cows, particularly from border areas with Laos and Cambodia, raising disease spread concerns. Despite efforts to control the smuggling, the Vietnamese government is struggling, especially with lax management at checkpoints. In response, the Prime Minister has signed two directives aimed at preventing and handling these illegal activities.
