Anti-government protests in Colombia have caused a significant disruption to the country's coffee exports, with around 800,000 60-kilo bags of coffee not being exported in May. As the world's second largest producer of arabica coffee, Colombia's high-quality beans are crucial for companies like Starbucks and Nespresso. The unrest has resulted in only about a third of the usual transport vehicles being able to reach the Atlantic ports. The situation, coupled with a drought in Brazil, the largest arabica producer, has led to a surge in New York coffee prices to over four-year highs. Ongoing protests, which have been ongoing for five weeks, are putting pressure on the government for economic and social changes, but have also caused delays of up to five weeks for Colombian coffee orders in the United States.
